Skin Tightening Information

If you’re looking for ways to tighten your skin without the extended healing time, pain, and expense of cosmetic surgery, you may want to consider radio frequency skin tightening. This procedure, which is relatively new, is a non-surgical option for people who want to treat wrinkles, sagging, and other signs of aging. Radio frequency skin tightening is performed by dermatologists and skin care clinics, and uses radio frequency (RF) energy on the skin of the face, heating up the various skin layers to stimulate collagen production, which smoothes and lifts the skin’s surface. This procedure requires no incisions to be made in the skin and has a low instance of side effects. Radio frequency skin tightening is a viable procedure for many people whose skin has not reacted favorably to laser or thermal treatments in the past.

The RF waves experience natural resistance from the skin as they penetrate the various layers, and just like an electrical wire becomes hot from the resistance to the flow of electrons, the skin heats up from the resistance to the RF waves. This heat helps boost collagen strength within the skin. The more collagen that is produced, the tighter the skin becomes. Generally, several sessions are needed before any visible change is noticeable, and you should keep in mind that the results will be gradual, as your body’s tissues respond to the treatment and the targeted heat.

On the day of your radio frequency skin tightening procedure you should avoid wearing any cosmetics or lotion, especially oil-based formulas, as they may affect how effectively the RF waves make contact with the skin. After you sit down, your doctor will spread a numbing cream on your skin to decrease the chances of discomfort. After the cream has sufficiently numbed the skin, he or she will use a grid transfer to improve the precision of the radio frequency skin tightening procedure. The skin care specialist will then use a gliding gel to increase the effectiveness of the delivery to the skin in order to reduce the chances of irritation. If you have sensitive skin and feel any kind of heated sensation after the treatment, you can request a cooling mist or thin gel to reduce or eliminate these sensations.

While radio frequency skin tightening has a lower instance of side effects than other cosmetic and non-invasive procedures, there are still several risks involved. Common side effects that have been reported include mild swelling of the treated skin, redness, sinking of the treated area, and sensitivity. You should monitor the treated skin carefully during the first few hours after treatment to ensure that your skin isn’t reacting negatively to the treatment. Do not touch or manipulate the area too much, as this might cause further irritation. If the heated sensations return, you can use a spray bottle to mist the area with a cool water and aloe vera mixture. If you should experience severe swelling, pain, or other unusual side effects, you should call your doctor immediately, as these may be signs of a serious side effect to the radio frequency skin tightening treatment. Immediately following the treatment, your skin will feel tighter, with more tightening improvements appearing gradually over the months after treatment.

Some people experience mild redness immediately following treatment (similar to a sunburnt look), but this usually disappears quickly. Most people find that they can return to work and normal activities immediately after treatment.

Depending on your practitioner you may be advised to use certain soothing lotions, creams or gels to lightly apply to the treatment area, or possibly cool, moisturising mists to apply as you feel necessary.

No special care is needed after treatment although your practitioner may suggest some of the following:

  • Light application of soothing/moisturising lotions, creams or gels to the treatment area;

  • cool, moisturising mists applied as you feel necessary;

  • cool water rinses or ice packs applied to the treatment area.
