The RF waves experience natural resistance from the skin as they penetrate the various layers, and just like an electrical wire becomes hot from the resistance to the flow of electrons, the skin heats up from the resistance to the RF waves. This heat helps boost collagen strength within the skin. The more collagen that is produced, the tighter the skin becomes. Generally, several sessions are needed before any visible change is noticeable, and you should keep in mind that the results will be gradual, as your body’s tissues respond to the treatment and the targeted heat.
On the day of your radio frequency skin tightening procedure you should avoid wearing any cosmetics or lotion, especially oil-based formulas, as they may affect how effectively the RF waves make contact with the skin. After you sit down, your doctor will spread a numbing cream on your skin to decrease the chances of discomfort. After the cream has sufficiently numbed the skin, he or she will use a grid transfer to improve the precision of the radio frequency skin tightening procedure. The skin care specialist will then use a gliding gel to increase the effectiveness of the delivery to the skin in order to reduce the chances of irritation. If you have sensitive skin and feel any kind of heated sensation after the treatment, you can request a cooling mist or thin gel to reduce or eliminate these sensations.
While radio frequency skin tightening has a lower instance of side effects than other cosmetic and non-invasive procedures, there are still several risks involved. Common side effects that have been reported include mild swelling of the treated skin, redness, sinking of the treated area, and sensitivity. Some people experience mild redness immediately following treatment (similar to a sunburnt look), but this usually disappears quickly. Most people find that they can return to work and normal activities immediately after treatment.
Depending on your practitioner you may be advised to use certain soothing lotions, creams or gels to lightly apply to the treatment area, or possibly cool, moisturising mists to apply as you feel necessary.
